How Emotions Affect Us

The science of how fear creates disease, and how love creates health

Fear-based beliefs create disease

Fear is understood as a high-arousal stress state associated with distinct patterns of brain and physiological activation. It is generated in the amygdala, a region in the temporal lobe of the brain. When the brain goes into a hyper-alert state due to fear, the pupils dilate, respiratory rate increases, blood pressure and heart rate rise, glucose delivery to the muscles increases, and the body prepares for a fight, flight, or freeze response to perceived danger.

Another part of the brain, the hippocampus, is closely related to the amygdala. The hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex help a person determine whether the danger is real or not—for example, how we react when we see a snake in the wild versus one in a zoo.

The amygdala, among its other functions, activates the sympathetic nervous system for the fight, flight, or freeze response.

Sympathetic nerve fibers originate in the brain and extend to the primary organs of the lymphatic system (bone marrow and thymus), as well as secondary organs (spleen and lymph nodes).

These fibers release a variety of factors that can influence the immune response by binding to receptors on white blood cells.

They also trigger the secretion of hormones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, prolactin, and growth hormone, as well as neuropeptides such as enkephalin, beta-endorphin, and melatonin.

These substances bind to white blood cell receptors and are associated with changes in immune regulation.

So we can see how fear negatively affects the immune system’s response, thus predisposing the body

The real
problem begins when there is:

a) suddenintense fear
b) chronic fear and anxiety

OEFT (Optimal EFT) help neutralize the connection between the amygdala-driven fear response and the sympathetic response, thereby reversing this negative cycle.

Finally, according to various experts, when fear becomes chronic: headaches may become migraines, muscle aches may develop into fibromyalgia, shortness of breath may become chronic asthma, and general discomfort may evolve into persistent pain.

Fear is also associated with symptoms such as chest pain, chills, dry mouth, nausea, rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, upset stomach, endocrine dysfunction, insomnia, insulin resistance, and shortness of breath.

Furthermore, chronic fear can lead to ongoing anxiety, which people often try to soothe through substances or addictive behaviors such as drugs, alcohol, smoking, gambling, or sex—further harming the immune system.

There are many other harmful consequences of chronic fear on our health (environmental, psychological, spiritual, etc.) that are not discussed here.

Positive Beliefs Based on Love Create Health

There are numerous studies, as well as a relatively new field in medicine called psychoneuroimmunology, showing that positive feelings of love are linked to stronger immune function, reduced stress, improved cardiovascular health, longer lifespan, better mental health, and overall well-being.

When we experience a healthy, loving relationship based on care, trust, and support, there is a profound mental, emotional, and physical impact on our health. When we feel emotionally connected to others and experience a sense of connection beyond ourselves, our brain releases neurochemicals such as oxytocin and serotonin, which help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.

Increased life expectancy

People with strong social and personal relationships tend to live longer, with lower risk of heart attacks, certain cancers, and infections.

Cardiovascular health

Supportive relationships help regulate stress hormones and reduce inflammation—two key factors in lowering cardiovascular risk.

Lower blood pressure

Happy couples tend to have lower blood pressure than those who are unhappily married or single.

Reduced anxiety

MRI studies suggest stable, long-term relationships activate brain reward centers and quiet anxiety-related regions.

Reduced stress

Loving connection regulates the nervous system and softens the body’s stress response.

Recovery from depression

Genuine emotional bonds support recovery and resilience.

Stronger immunity

Love and connection support immune function.

Improved pain management

Connection can ease the perception and impact of chronic pain.

Better gut health

Emotional safety supports the gut-brain axis.

Improved sleep quality

A regulated nervous system makes deeper, more restorative sleep possible.

EFT, and especially EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), and especially OEFT (Optimal EFT), when applied correctlyare powerful tools  for replacing low-frequency negative emotions and limiting beliefs with higher-frequency emotions based on love and positive beliefs about ourselves, helping us develop our full potential.
