Does EFT Tapping Really Work? The Evidence Behind EFT Therapy
If you’re considering EFT therapy for the first time, you’ve probably asked yourself the same question that almost everyone asks before their first session:

Does tapping on a few points on your face and hands actually do anything**,** or is it just a placebo dressed up as therapy?
It’s a fair question. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) can look strange from the outside. However, it’s also one of the most extensively researched approaches in the field of energy psychology, with a growing body of clinical trials supporting its effectiveness. Let’s look at what the research actually shows.
What EFT Therapy Claims to Do
There are two forms of EFT: EFT Tapping (Mechanical EFT) and Optimal EFT (OEFT).
EFT Tapping combines elements of cognitive and exposure-based approaches with gentle tapping on specific acupressure points while making specific statements and focusing on a particular memory, emotion, or physical symptom. The idea is that this combination helps calm the body’s stress response while you process what’s bothering you, making it easier to release emotional intensity that talk-based methods alone can sometimes struggle to resolve.
The foundational premise of EFT is: negative emotions arise from disruptions in the body’s energy system. Another useful metaphor for understanding how EFT works is the tabletop-and-table-legs metaphor. Imagine your problem as the tabletop. The legs of the table represent the specific events in your life that support that problem. As you clear the emotional charge from each specific event, you remove one of the table legs. Eventually, when enough legs have been removed, the tabletop can no longer remain standing.
Optimal EFT (OEFT) is based on the same underlying principles as EFT Tapping, but instead of using physical tapping, it relies on meditation and inner connection. This approach if mastered and done properly is more powerful than tapping alone.
That’s the theory. What does the evidence say? It is important to note that only EFT Tapping has been extensively researched. Optimal EFT remains in an experimental stage and currently lacks comparable scientific evidence.
The Research Behind EFT Tapping – Clinical Trials Have Grown Significantly
EFT has moved well beyond a handful of small studies. A systematic review identified 56 randomized controlled trials involving more than 2,000 participants, along with eight meta-analyses. The review found successful independent replication for anxiety, depression, PTSD, phobias, sports performance, and cortisol levels. This means that multiple independent research teams, working in different settings, have consistently reported similar findings—one of the strongest indicators of reliability in clinical research.
- Measurable Reductions in the Stress Hormone Cortisol
One of the most compelling findings concerns not only how people feel after EFT therapy, but also what happens physiologically. In a randomized controlled trial, participants who received EFT Tapping showed a 24.39% reduction in cortisol, compared with approximately 14% in both a talk-therapy comparison group and a no-treatment group. This finding has since been independently replicated by another research team. Because cortisol is an objective biological marker, it cannot be influenced simply by participants wanting to report feeling better.
Strong Results for Anxiety, Depression, and PTSD
In the same trial, participants receiving EFT demonstrated statistically significant improvements: anxiety decreased by more than 58%, depression by nearly 49%, and overall symptom severity by more than 50%. A separate meta-analysis, conducted using strict APA quality criteria, examined PTSD specifically and concluded that EFT was efficacious and reliable, with meaningful improvements typically occurring within four to ten sessions and demonstrating an unusually large effect size.
- Benefits Extend Beyond Psychological Symptoms
Research has also documented physiological improvements beyond cortisol. A broader review of clinical EFT reported positive changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormone levels, alongside reductions in anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms, pain, and cravings.
Why the Tapping Component Appears to Matter
A common question is whether the tapping itself contributes to the results or whether EFT would work equally well through talking and cognitive reframing alone. Researchers have investigated this directly, and current evidence suggests that acupoint stimulation is not merely a comforting ritual added to psychotherapy. Instead, it appears to generate measurable electrochemical signals that influence both limbic and executive brain regions, while also producing measurable biological changes such as reduced cortisol levels.
What Does This Mean for You?
Current research supports the conclusion that EFT is a legitimate and increasingly well-studied therapeutic approach, rather than simply a feel-good ritual without measurable effects. It is supported by decades of clinical research, replicated findings, and documented biological as well as psychological changes.
How Does This Fit Into EFT Therapy at EFTMiracles?
At EFTMiracles, sessions extend beyond standard EFT Tapping. George Asithianakis trained directly under Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, and is certified as an EFT/OEFT Master Practitioner. Depending on the client’s needs, sessions may incorporate both classical EFT Tapping and the more advanced Optimal EFT approach.
Ready to Experience EFT Therapy for Yourself?
Reading about the research is one thing—experiencing the results firsthand is another. If you’re dealing with anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, or simply feel stuck, an EFT therapy session with EFTMiracles may be the next step toward meaningful and lasting change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does EFT Tapping really work according to the research?
According to the blog, EFT Tapping is supported by a growing body of clinical research, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses. The article states that studies have reported positive outcomes for anxiety, depression, PTSD, phobias, sports performance, and cortisol levels, making EFT one of the more extensively researched approaches in energy psychology.
What is the difference between EFT Tapping and Optimal EFT (OEFT)?
The blog explains that EFT Tapping combines focused attention on an issue with tapping on specific acupressure points, while Optimal EFT (OEFT) uses meditation and inner connection without physical tapping. It also notes that EFT Tapping has been extensively researched, whereas Optimal EFT is still considered experimental and has less scientific evidence available.
What conditions may EFT Tapping help address?
Based on the research discussed in the blog, EFT Tapping has been associated with improvements in anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stress, pain, cravings, and overall emotional well-being. The article also mentions physiological benefits, including reductions in cortisol, heart rate, and blood pressure.
Why is the tapping component considered important in EFT?
The blog states that researchers have examined whether tapping itself contributes to the results and suggests that acupoint stimulation may produce measurable biological and neurological effects. According to the article, tapping appears to influence stress-related brain activity and may contribute to physiological changes such as reduced cortisol levels.
How does EFTMiracles approach EFT therapy?
The blog explains that EFTMiracles offers sessions that may include both traditional EFT Tapping and Optimal EFT, depending on each client’s needs. Sessions are conducted by George Asithianakis, who trained directly under EFT founder Gary Craig and is described as a certified EFT/OEFT Master Practitioner.
