When I first encountered Optimal EFT, my reaction mirrored my initial skepticism toward EFT itself: a sharp mix of intrigue and skepticism.
Optimal EFT initially felt like a contradiction in terms. Having built my practice on EFT, I knew the tapping sequence was non-negotiable, so an approach that removes the tapping entirely didn’t just seem new; it seemed impossible.
This wasn’t idle curiosity. My background in neurosurgery trained me to look past surface-level protocols and interrogate the underlying architecture of healing. I had no interest in collecting techniques for their own sake; I needed to understand the mechanism before I would trust the method.
The breakthrough came through dialogue with Gary Craig, EFT’s founder. He reframed Optimal EFT not as a deviation from the work, but as its logical extension—shifting the locus of change from the body’s meridians to the mind’s deeper layers.
That reframe changed everything. Optimal EFT now sits at the center of my clinical work because it transcends the mechanical act of tapping and engages the spiritual substrate where transformation actually occurs. Here’s what I mean.
What Is Optimal EFT?
Optimal EFT, also known as OEFT, was introduced by Gary Craig as the spiritual dimension of Emotional Freedom Techniques. To understand it, we first need to understand traditional EFT.
Traditional EFT, often called EFT tapping, involves focusing on a specific issue, such as a painful memory, a fear, or an emotional reaction, while gently tapping with your fingertips on a series of points on the face and upper body.
It is simple, accessible, and easy to learn. You can read more in my blog post – What is EFT?
Optimal EFT takes a different approach. We still work with the same kinds of emotional issues, memories, and experiences.
The main difference is that, instead of tapping on acupuncture points, we use focused meditation on the emotionally charged event and surrender the process to what Gary called the Unseen Therapist.
At first, this might sound like a small change. After all, the emotional issue remains the same. But removing physical tapping changes the way we approach the process.
For me, this was the beginning of a much deeper exploration.
How Does Optimal EFT Work?
Imagine that there is a memory you have carried for years. Whenever you think about it, you feel the same anger, sadness, fear, or disappointment.
You may have talked about it many times. You may even understand why you feel the way you do. Yet the emotional reaction is still there.
This is where I became interested in the difference between understanding an emotion intellectually and experiencing a genuine change in the way we relate to it.
In traditional EFT, we bring the issue to mind while tapping on specific points on the body. In Optimal EFT, we bring the issue into our awareness and use focused meditation rather than physical tapping.
The intention is not to fight the emotion or force it to disappear. Instead, we allow the experience to be present while turning our attention towards the connection with the Unseen Therapist.
In the OEFT framework, this involves a process of surrender. Rather than relying entirely on our own effort to resolve the emotional issue, we allow the process to unfold through this deeper spiritual connection.
Understanding the Unseen Therapist
The Unseen Therapist was one of the most fascinating concepts I encountered through Gary Craig.
According to Gary’s approach, it represents a spiritual healing presence associated with Love. Some people may relate it to God, the Holy Spirit, or a higher intelligence, while others see it as universal Love or a deeper connection with life.
We often try to fix, analyse, or push away emotional pain. Optimal EFT invites us to approach these experiences differently, with Love, acceptance, and surrender rather than constant struggle.
For me, this is the spiritual foundation of Optimal EFT. It is important to understand that the Unseen Therapist is a spiritual concept, not a scientifically established explanation of how healing occurs.

Optimal EFT vs EFT Tapping
Here are the main differences as I see them.
1. The method
Traditional EFT uses gentle tapping on specific points on the face and upper body. Optimal EFT uses focused meditation instead of physical tapping. There is no tapping sequence to follow.
2. The structure
Traditional EFT follows a structured process, which makes it relatively easy to learn and practise independently. Optimal EFT retains the focus on a particular emotional issue but introduces the spiritual dimension of connecting with the Unseen Therapist.
3. The role of the practitioner
In Optimal EFT, the practitioner guides the process and, within the OEFT approach, also connects with the Unseen Therapist during the meditation. This means the client does not necessarily have to be an experienced meditator to explore the method with a practitioner.
4. The underlying philosophy
Traditional EFT combines focused attention on an emotional issue with physical tapping and psychological techniques. Optimal EFT places greater emphasis on meditation, surrender, and the spiritual understanding of Love.
5. The experience
With traditional EFT, the physical tapping is an active part of the process. With Optimal EFT, the focus is on the emotional experience and the meditative process. Some people prefer the structure of tapping, while others are drawn to the spiritual dimension of OEFT.
Both approaches offer different ways of working with emotional difficulties. The important thing is to understand what each involves rather than assuming that one approach must be right for everyone.
Optimal EFT Benefits
What interests me most about Optimal EFT is the way it invites us to approach emotional experiences differently.
Rather than trying to control every feeling or force ourselves to move on from something painful, the approach encourages us to become present with the experience and surrender the process to the Unseen Therapist.
People who explore Optimal EFT may find the following aspects particularly meaningful:
- A different approach to emotional difficulties: Working with difficult feelings and memories through focused meditation rather than physical tapping.
- Less emphasis on doing everything yourself: The practice centres on surrender rather than relying entirely on personal effort to produce a result.
- A spiritual dimension: Exploring the concepts of Love, connection, and the Unseen Therapist.
- A guided experience: Working with a practitioner can provide structure and support, especially if meditation is unfamiliar or difficult.
- An opportunity for self-exploration: Bringing attention to emotional reactions and experiences that may deserve further understanding.
These are aspects of the approach that may appeal to people who explore it. They should not be understood as guaranteed clinical benefits. Experiences differ, and the effectiveness of Optimal EFT has not yet been established through the same body of research available for traditional EFT tapping
How Do You Practice Optimal EFT?
The process can involve techniques such as the Tell the Story technique, the Movie technique, the Tearless Trauma technique, and Chasing the Pain. These help identify the particular memory, emotion, or experience being explored.
The difference is that, rather than tapping through a sequence of points, the practitioner guides the client through a focused meditative process involving the Unseen Therapist.
For example, suppose you are struggling with a painful memory. The aim is not to go through every detail repeatedly or force yourself to relive the experience. Instead, the practitioner helps you focus on the relevant issue while following the OEFT approach.
The process involves surrender rather than trying to make something happen through willpower alone.
This is one reason I believe guidance can be useful. You do not need to be an expert in meditation before you begin. A practitioner can help you understand the process and work with the issue at a pace that feels manageable.
If an emotional memory feels overwhelming, there is no need to push through it. Appropriate professional support is especially important when dealing with trauma or significant mental-health difficulties.
What Can Optimal EFT Be Used For?
People come to EFT and Optimal EFT for different reasons. Sometimes there is a specific memory that continues to cause distress. Sometimes the issue is a recurring emotional reaction, a fear, or a pattern that seems to repeat itself in different parts of life.
Optimal EFT may be explored as a complementary approach for working with:
- Stress and emotional overwhelm.
- Fear, anxiety, and recurring worries.
- Painful or emotionally charged memories.
- Anger, sadness, guilt, and other difficult feelings.
- Self-doubt and limiting beliefs.
- Emotional challenges involving relationships or personal experiences.
- Personal and spiritual growth.
Exploring Optimal EFT with EFT Miracles
My own journey into this work was not straightforward. I trained as a neurosurgeon and worked in hospitals across Europe and at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. After developing multiple sclerosis, I had to leave my surgical career and explore other approaches to health. This eventually led me to EFT, which became an important part of my life and work.
Later, I contacted Gary Craig, who became my mentor. Through EFT and Optimal EFT, I continued exploring the relationship between emotions and the spiritual dimension of healing. Today, at EFT Miracles, I help people explore these approaches while respecting their individual needs and existing medical care.
